Despite all of the efforts that have been made over the past few decades to reduce the number of smokers in the United States, the progress has not matched the effort that was put forth. Even now, one in four men smoke and one in six women are smokers.
This is puzzling for people who have never smoked. These people do not understand how smokers can continue to smoke even when they are presented with and aware of the facts. Cigarettes are one of the leading killers in the country, and they contribute to several health issues including:
• Heart disease
• High blood pressure
With all of these health concerns related to smoking, nonsmokers often wonder why someone would risk their health for this habit.
The truth is smokers are well aware of the facts. They understand the financial implications cigarette smoking has on their lives as well as the health implications. However, they continue to smoke because they are addicted to the nicotine that is located in the tobacco. Smokers are also accustomed to psychological comforts that smoking cigarettes provide them with.
If you are a smoker, there are several tips that you can implement into your daily routine so you can begin your journey to smoking cessation today.
Create A List Of All The Things You Like About Smoking
While writing out your list, you should be truthful and honest. Draw line down the center of the paper and on one side write down everything you like about smoking, and on the other side write down everything you dislike about smoking. You can add or remove things on the list and even ask friends and family for feedback. Once you have listed more disadvantages than advantages, you are ready to quit smoking.
Determine The Date You Will Quit
Using terms such as ‘someday’ and ‘next year’ will not give you a concrete date to quit smoking. Set a date that you will stop smoking and even create a contract to sign. This will hold you accountable to keep your promise.
Make A List Why It Will Be Difficult For You To Quit
This may be a difficult and discouraging list to complete. When you write in a reason, write down an alternative. For example, if you write down ‘nicotine is too addictive’, you can write beside it, ‘try a nicotine patch or an electronic cigarette’. If you think that smoking helps you to alleviate stress, you can use exercise as an alternative.
Stop Purchasing Cartons Of Cigarettes
Instead of buying an entire carton of cigarettes, only buy a pack at a time. Carry only one or two cigarettes on your person at any time. This will slowly wean you away from smoking.
Have A List Prepare Of Things To Do When You Have Get Cravings
When you begin to get cravings for cigarettes, find other activities to do that will occupy your time. Some of the activities you can place on the list are:
• Drink water
• Go for a walk
• Chew gum
• Brush your teeth
• Take a nap
• Call a friend
• Practice deep breathing or meditate
These are just a few of the tips that you can use when you are ready to quit smoking. Get the support of family and friends and take one day at a time so you can finally become smoke free.
